How It Works
A complete guide to splitting expenses with JustSplit

Create Your Account
Getting started with JustSplit is quick and easy:
- Click “Get Started” on the homepage or visit the sign-up page
- Sign up using your email address or Google account through our secure authentication system
- No password required when using social login - we handle security for you
- Once signed in, you will be taken directly to your dashboard

Create a Group
Groups are where you track expenses with specific people:
- From your dashboard, click the “Create Group” button
- Enter a name for your group (e.g., “Roommates”, “Trip to Paris”)
- Optionally add a description to help identify the group's purpose
- Click “Create” and your new group is ready
You can create unlimited groups for different purposes - trips, households, events, or projects.

Invite Members
Invite others to join your group and split expenses:
- Open your group and click the “Invite Member” button
- Copy the unique invite link or send email invitations through the modal
- Anyone with the link can join the group after signing in
- Members can view all expenses and balances within the group
Tip: Each group has its own unique invite link. You can also enable a public link in group settings for view-only access.

Add Expenses
Record expenses as they happen:
- In your group, click “Add Expense”
- Enter the expense details:
- Description (e.g., “Dinner at Joe's”)
- Amount (in your preferred currency)
- Who paid for the expense
- Date of the expense
- Select who participated in the expense (who should split the cost)
- Choose the split type:
- Equal: Split evenly among participants
- Percentage: Each person pays a specific %
- Amount: Specify exact amounts per person

Edit or Delete Expenses
Made a mistake? No problem:
- Find the expense in your group's expense list
- Click on the expense to open its details
- Click “Edit” to modify any details - amount, description, participants, or split type
- Click “Delete” to remove the expense entirely (cannot be undone)
All changes update balances instantly for all group members.

Track Balances & Settle Up
See who owes what at a glance:
- The Balances tab shows the net amount each member owes or is owed
- Positive balance = someone owes you; Negative = you owe someone
- View simplified settlement suggestions - the minimum number of transactions needed to settle all debts
- Record settlements when payments are made to keep balance history accurate
Pro Tips
- Real-time updates: All changes sync instantly across devices for all group members via Convex
- Categorize expenses: Use categories like Food, Transport, Accommodation for better tracking
- Group currency: Each group uses a single currency for consistency - change it in group settings
- Guest members: Add non-registered users as guest members to track their share of expenses
- Public links: Enable public links in group settings for view-only access without requiring login
